Good Reads
I love books, of all kinds! In fact, one of my favorite things to do is
spend a couple hours browsing aisle to aisle at the bookstore. I can't walk past a
bookstore or library without going in. I bring home so many that my husband thinks I have
some kind of affliction. If I had to pick a favorite genre, it would be "books
you can't wait to curl up with on a cold winter night". Here are a few of my
FAVORITE reads lately. Got a good one that should be on here?

In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick
IMHO, the best sea story ever written! The true story of a whale ship sunk by
an angry whale in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in 1820. What the crew goes through
just trying to survive will make you alternately hungry, thirsty, and squeamish.
Also an interesting look back at what attitudes towards wildlife and
conservation in the 1800s. A great winter read!!
If you like this, Nathaniel Philbrick's other historical books (Mayflower & Sea
of Glory) are also good.
Marley & Me by John Grogan
A really great true story by John Grogan, a newspaper columnist in Philadelphia. It's about
their yellow lab Marley, from the time he was a puppy through old age. Just a really great, well-written, funny
story. It reminded me so much of my own yellow lab Barney & what he was like as
a puppy, esp. the chapter "The Things He Ate".
Into the Wild
by John Krakauer
Whether or not you think this guy was a hero or a misguided & sheltered fool,
this is a fascinating. Even knowing how it will end, it really gripped me when
I was reading it. John Krakauer really knows how to write a great story!
Seabiscuit
by Laura Hillenbrand
Quite possibly the greatest sports Cinderella story of all time. The horse, the
trainer, & the jockey & the owner were all either seriously down on their luck
that had failed time & time again. The owner was dealing with the devastating
accidental death of his son. The story of how the people & the horse came
together & began winning championships is really amazing. If it were fiction,
it would be too unbelievable.
Into Thin Air
by John Krakauer
I read this after being so impressed by Into the Wild. For me, it was a great
armchair adventure about people with the hubris to want to climb mountains, &
the even more insane risks some are willing to take to summit Mount Everest.
Great winter read!!
The Blind Side
by Michael Lewis
A book about a kid from the wrong side of the tracks in Memphis who has an
unbelievable natural football talent, & the athletic family that practically
adopts him. Even if you're not a sports fan (and my football knowledge is
marginal), the story is so well told that it really captivates you. A really
good read for anyone who is interested in college football, or needs to fill
the void between football season & baseball season!
